“These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock. Rain poured down, the river flooded, a tornado hit—but nothing moved that house. It was fixed to the rock.
“But if you just use my words in Bible studies and don’t work them into your life, you are like a stupid carpenter who built his house on the sandy beach. When a storm rolled in and the waves came up, it collapsed like a house of cards.” -Matthew 7:24-27 Msg.
Sometimes I've wondered why people turn away from Bible truths they grew up with, and I think this is key: hearing the Word in Bible studies without paying attention to it and implementing it into your life may look Christian-like but it doesn't provide the foundation you need when difficulty comes (and storms will come!).
Building on the foundation of Jesus understands that God wants to be in relationship with each one of us. I'm working on teaching my kids this: they have a best friend - the God of the universe! - who can help them walk through life well. When they feel alone, He is by their side. When they feel afraid, they can ask for courage. When they are happy, celebrate with Him!
He is our friend. He is our Savior. He is who we can build our lives upon and make our decisions upon. I'm very grateful.
